Choosing and Tips
Choosing the right glove at a glance:
Cotton jersey: Protects against dirt, heat, cold and abrasions. Easily imprinted in multi-color.
Leather: Unequaled for protection and comfort in work gloves. Man-made materials just can't surpass it. But there are some sub-divisions:
- Deerskin: The most comfortable, supple, and remains that way even after becoming wet.
- Cowhide: Pliable, strong and durable.
- Goat: Fairly durable, and soft to the touch.
- Pigskin: Strong, breathable and good protection against abrasions.
Rubberized fabric: A little less comfortable than a material that breathes but essential for any situation that requires a good grip.
Terry cloth (cotton or a blend): Offers protection against heat and abrasive items.
Fleece: Usually poly fleece is very soft to the touch and can keep hands incredibly warm because it traps heat.
Wool: Good protection against cold if kept dry. Depending on their quality, wool gloves can be a bit abrasive to the touch.
Glove Care Tips:
- Keep leather gloves in a cool dry place.
- If gloves get wet, lay them out to dry in a warm place, but never put them on a heater or in the oven. It's a potential fire hazard and causes gloves to dry.
- Leather gloves intended for wet work should be treated with mink oil or similar waterproofing compound. These usually darken the leather.
- Never wash fleece gloves with anything wool; wool tends to create a lot of lint that will stick to your fleece gloves.
- Hand wash wool gloves and lay them out flat to dry.
- Depending on the dirt (i.e., not oil or paint), cotton gloves can usually be tossed in the washing machine with other laundry.
